How To Get Your Sliding Patio Doors Ready For Spring & Summer!

April 23, 2018

After having a home closed up over the long winter, there’s nothing better than opening up your patio door to welcome in fresh spring breezes. But if your door is difficult to slide open due to a dirty track, this can be a challenge. Here is a simple guide to help you get your sliding door back in working order and ready for warmer weather!

Cleaning the Track

The most common cause of a patio door that sticks is debris caught around the rollers and in the lower track. This channel can easily become clogged with dirt, hair and sidewalk salt as people and pets enter and exit. Begin by prying off the plugs that cover the adjustment screws located at the bottom or side edge of the door. Using a flat-head screwdriver, turn the screws counter-clockwise to pull the rollers up into the door. From the inside, slide the glass door to the center of the track, tilt the top of the door toward you and carefully lift it up out of the bottom track.

Use a vacuum to clean inside the tracks where the door and screen slide. To get into narrow gaps, use an old toothbrush or flat-head screwdriver. After the dirt has been removed, clean the rollers and tracks with alcohol, or dish soap and warm water. When the tracks are dry, lubricate them with a silicone-based lubricant (which doesn’t attract dirt).

If the door still does not slide easily after being cleaned and lubricated, it may be misaligned within the frame. Turn the adjustment screw clockwise until it becomes easier to open. If it becomes more difficult, turn the screw counterclockwise until the door opens smoothly.

Cleaning the Glass

Finish the job by cleaning the glass with a window cleaning solution, or make your own by combining ¼ cup of vinegar, ½ teaspoon dish soap and two cups of hot water in a spray bottle. Then sit back and enjoy the scenery through your freshly cleaned sliding patio door!
